About the museum
The Muzeum Afryki (Africa Museum) in Sobanice grew out of the private collection of Stefan Kaminski, who brought masks, sculptures, instruments, toys and objects of worship back from his expeditions to Africa. The museum's statute was approved on 23 September 2013 by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, placing the institution on the list of museums established by private individuals. The museum opened to visitors in 2014 on the grounds of the AGROTOUR Centre for Entertainment and Recreation.
The collection, estimated at several thousand objects, includes sculptures, masks, costumes, everyday objects and crafts from various regions of Africa, among them about two thousand masks with initiation and religious functions. The exhibition covers about 500 m², and a visit is usually preceded by a lecture of about twenty minutes.
Next to the museum building is the African Centre with two reconstructed villages: one modelled on a village from Angola and the other on one from Mali. The organisers stress that it is a place where the exhibits are within sight and visitors can feel the atmosphere of an African village.
