About the museum

The museums are housed in the buildings of the medieval monastery of the Canons Regular in Czerwińsk nad Wisłą, which the Salesians have managed since 1923. In 2021 the Czerwińsk abbey was recognised as a monument of history (pomnik historii).

The Missionary Museum was founded in 1976 on the initiative of Fr. Zbigniew Malinowski SDB, from souvenirs brought from all over the world by Salesian missionaries. Part of the collection is kept in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation (Matki Bożej Pocieszenia) and forms a lapidarium.

In 2015 the Cardinal August Hlond Museum was opened. Hlond, a Salesian and Primate of Poland from 1926 to 1948, is the only museum in the country devoted to his memory. It holds the Primate's personal belongings, missals, prayer books, relics, liturgical vestments, portraits, family photographs and a cast of his face made after his death. In 2018 the Mazovian Regional Chamber (Mazowiecka Izba Regionalna) was created on the first floor of the eastern wing of the monastery, with textiles, costumes, tools and equipment from former farms; old Vistula boats stand in the monastery gardens.
