About the museum
The museum is housed in an 1809 townhouse at Stary Rynek 6 (Old Market Square) in Gąbin, where Felicjan Sławoj Składkowski, a doctor, general and the last prime minister of the Second Polish Republic, was born in 1885. In the 1990s the building became the seat of the Society of Friends of the Gąbin Land (Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Gąbińskiej), and in 1999 the Social Museum of the Gąbin Land began operating here. The first exhibitions were organised on the initiative of the Society and the Gąbin branch of the Association of Piłsudski Followers (Związek Piłsudczyków) as early as the early 1990s.
The heart of the museum is a permanent exhibition devoted to Składkowski. In 1995 the prime minister's widow, Jadwiga Składkowska, handed over to her husband's home town documents, photographs and personal memorabilia, and in 2007 the collections were enriched with further archival material. Among the exhibits are official documents, correspondence, albums, books, the manuscript of a diary from 1940–1958 and Jadwiga's diary from 1962–1964.
The collection numbers about a thousand objects, divided into 19 sections. The museum also organises temporary and occasional exhibitions, and the townhouse, renovated in 2017, also serves as a branch of the civil registry office (urząd stanu cywilnego).
