About the museum
The Jerzy Dunin-Borkowski Museum in Krośniewice was created on the basis of a collection of several thousand items, which its creator handed over to the National Museum in Warsaw on 24 September 1978. By order of the Minister of Culture of 28 November 1978, a museum was established in Krośniewice as a state institution, and its founder became its lifelong curator. In 1979 the whole complex of the former coaching inn was bought to house the institution.
The seat is a classicist manor coaching inn built at the beginning of the 19th century by Rajmund Rembieliński in the centre of the town, by the market square. The main trapezoid-shaped building stands next to the parish church, and in 1821 a stable and coach house were added. According to local tradition, Napoleon I, Prince Józef Poniatowski and Fryderyk Chopin were among the guests at the inn. The main building was renovated in 1995–1998, and the façades were restored in 2001–2003, making the complex a jewel of classicist architecture in Krośniewice.
The permanent exhibition includes, among others, the room of Gen. Władysław Anders, who was born in nearby Błonie; a numismatic cabinet with more than 5,200 coins, medals and prints; and part of the display “Kolekcjonerskie pasje” (Collecting Passions) in the former stable and coach house, where clocks, memorabilia of famous Poles and everyday objects are shown. The museum also has memorial rooms, an education programme, a shop, a conference and banquet hall, and guest rooms.
