About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Kutnie (Regional Museum in Kutno) was founded in 1981 by an organising committee, to document and popularise the history of Kutno and its surroundings. For years it operated in various locations, and its collections came to include historical memorabilia, crafts and folk art. After the revitalisation of the Saxon Palace was completed, the institution moved into this building and was turned into a museum called Muzeum Pałac Saski w Kutnie (Saxon Palace Museum in Kutno).
The palace was built around 1750 on the orders of King Augustus III of Saxony, as one of the stops on the new postal route from Warsaw to Dresden. It was a royal residence until the monarch's death in 1763; later it changed owners and purpose, and in 2003 it burned down. Revitalisation began in 2015. The building is the only secular wooden monument of Dresden Baroque architecture in Poland to have survived to the present day.
The permanent exhibitions are devoted to the times of Augustus III and the Polish-Saxon union, to the history of the palace itself and to the history of the town of Kutno. Visits are only with a guide and combine the interiors of the palace with a part in the neighbouring town hall. The museum also organises workshops, concerts and educational events.
