About the museum
Czarna Góra is one of fourteen villages of the Polish Spisz region and was founded at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. In the northern part of the village, in the Zagóra settlement, stands a wooden homestead that once belonged to the prosperous Korkosz family. The layout of the buildings shows the development of the Spiš homestead: from a simple set of a cottage and stable at the end of the 19th century to an extended farm from the 1930s.
The oldest buildings were erected at the end of the 19th century by Alojzy Chyżny. After returning from America in 1919, he added a “great room” with a storeroom. The expansion continued under Sebastian Korkosz, who in the 1930s added a stone stable and a cart shed, and in the 1940s a “summer” room, also called the “lord’s” room, with a separate entrance. At the end of the 1940s the family moved to Slovakia, and in 1980 Sebastian Korkosz’s descendants handed the homestead over to the State Treasury with the wish that a museum be established there.
After a conservation renovation, the Tatra Museum set up an ethnographic display in the interiors showing a wealthy Spiš farm of the interwar period. Visitors see the vestibule with a carpentry workshop, the kitchen, the great room and the lord’s room with a weaving workshop, as well as sculptures and photographs by the talented family. The stone stable houses an exhibition on flax processing, and the cart shed contains a cart with baskets and obońki.
