About the museum

The Krajna Land Museum (Muzeum Ziemi Krajeńskiej) was created on the initiative of a group of civic activists who wanted to preserve the history, traditions and folk culture of Krajna. In 1963 an organising committee was formed, and a year later it became the Krajna Cultural Society (Krajeńskie Towarzystwo Kulturalne). The museum opened on 22 July 1964 in a small seat of three rooms at ul. Gimnazjalna, where, among other things, archaeological finds from the Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) in Nakło were shown. Most of the collections came from residents who responded to an appeal for donations.

In 1967 the institution moved to the County House of Culture (Powiatowy Dom Kultury) at ul. Mickiewicza. When the collections outgrew that space, the 19th-century grain granary at ul. Pocztowa 14 was chosen as the new seat. The derelict building was dismantled and rebuilt from the foundations in 1985–1990, keeping its former external appearance. The new seat opened on 3 May 1990, and the granary became one of the town's landmarks.

On the ground floor are the offices, a library and a workshop room; on the first floor are temporary exhibitions; and on the second floor is the permanent exhibition “Krajna and Nakło from Prehistory to the Present”. It covers archaeology, medieval objects from the Castle Square, the development of the town, the Greater Poland Uprising (powstanie wielkopolskie), the German occupation, everyday life and the ethnography of Krajna. A lapidarium has been set up in the small garden. The museum also runs museum lessons and ceramics and art workshops.
