About the museum
The Pałuckie Muzeum Techniki Wojskowej i Uzbrojenia w Kowalewku (Pałuki Museum of Military Technology and Armaments in Kowalewko) was founded in 2012 by members of the Jednostka Ratownictwa Medycznego (Medical Rescue Unit, today the Jednostka Ratownictwa Specjalnego, Special Rescue Unit), on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Kcynia. It was the first museum in the gmina of Kcynia, and its rules were approved by the then Minister of Culture. The museum is an organisational unit of the rescue unit, which has been operating in Kowalewko since 2003.
The founders wanted to show exhibits donated earlier by former soldiers of the Armia Krajowa (Home Army), veterans of the 27th Volhynian Infantry Division of the Home Army, soldiers of the Ludowe Wojsko Polskie (People’s Polish Army) and scouts. The collections include uniforms, medals and decorations, edged and firearms, radio receivers from 1924 to the 1980s, historic radio stations and soldiers’ memorabilia.
The main element of the museum, however, is the collection of vehicles used by the army and by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to a 2012 description, these include an armoured personnel carrier, the BTR-60, a howitzer, a BRDM-2 vehicle and a UAZ-469 off-road vehicle. A permanent exhibition of heavy military equipment was planned on the unit’s premises, and the museum also presents itself outside its seat, for example in schools.
