About the museum
The first collecting of historical memorabilia in Szubin dates back to the interwar period. During the war, valuable documents and photographs were hidden by local scouts of the Szare Szeregi (Grey Ranks). In 1965 an Izba Pamięci Narodowej (National Memorial Room) was set up at the Dom Harcerza (Scouts’ House), and since 1993 the Muzeum Ziemi Szubińskiej (Szubin Land Museum) has been operating. It was established by resolution of the town council and took over the traditions and collections of the memorial room. The patron of the institution is Zenon Erdmann.
The museum is located at ul. Szkolna 2 and collects material from history, ethnography and art. Its permanent exhibitions are devoted to the history of Szubin and the Szubin Land, the knights’ castle in Szubin, the history of scouting, the Second World War, the Greater Poland Uprising, collecting and local material culture. The castle exhibition was rearranged in 2018, and the visit can be combined with a guided walk around the castle ruins.
Among the exhibits, the battle pennant of the division commander General Kutrzeba from 1939, the scouting banner from Bracin of 1916, military items, coins, philately, early printed books including a proclamation by King Stanisław August from 1792, and over five hundred volumes of scouting chronicles stand out. A local group of the Greater Poland Uprising Memorial Society (Towarzystwo Pamięci Powstania Wielkopolskiego), the Youth Philatelists’ Club (Młodzieżowy Klub Filatelistów) and the ZHP Seniors’ Club (Klub Seniorów ZHP) are active at the museum.
