About the museum

The Lubin Land Museum began its activity in 2002 as the fruit of many years of efforts by the Society of Friends of the Lubin Land (Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Lubińskiej). It is named after the geologist Jan Wyżykowski, whose research led in 1957 to the discovery of the Lubin–Sieroszowice copper deposit. The institution is located on the grounds of the “Bolesław” shaft, which belongs to the Lubin Mining Plants of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., that is, in an active workplace.

The “Bolesław” shaft began to be sunk in 1960, and the copper seams were reached in March 1963. An exhibition on the mining of copper ores and the history of the region was set up in the building of the former compressor house. In the area around the museum stands a park of machines with retired mining vehicles and equipment.

The collections include mining machines, copper minerals, documents and chronicles, memorabilia of Jan Wyżykowski, mining clothing and a reconstructed adit (sztolnia). The exhibition is supplemented by, among other things, a salt grotto showing the conditions of salt extraction and a simulation of a descent into the mine. The museum also sells regional publications and is sometimes a venue for concerts.
