About the museum
The Muzeum Archeologiczno-Historyczne w Głogowie began its activity on 7 October 1967 as the Museum of Non-Ferrous Metal Smelting and Casting (Muzeum Hutnictwa i Odlewnictwa Metali Kolorowych). From the start its seat was the Castle of the Dukes of Głogów, then still in ruins; earlier, from 1965, a museum room had operated here. The first director was the archaeologist Mieczysław Kaczkowski, thanks to whom the archaeological collections grew rapidly.
In 1971–1974 the museum was temporarily housed in the palace in Czerna, and after the reconstruction of the castle was completed in 1983 it received the whole building. Since 1992 it has operated under its present name. In 2010 a branch was opened, the Ośrodek Archeologiczno-Numizmatyczny (Archaeological and Numismatic Centre) at ul. Portowa 1.
The collections number more than 40,000 exhibits; the largest part consists of coins, including a hoard of medieval coins discovered in 1987, as well as archaeological and historical objects, maps, early printed books, postcards, art, and a collection of Inuit sculptures. The permanent exhibitions tell of the defence of Głogów in 1109, of the coin hoards found in the town and of the history of the people of Głogów after 1945. Visitors can also climb the castle tower.
