About the museum
The first Cistercians arrived at Lubiąż on 16 August 1163 from Pforta in Thuringia, brought by Duke Bolesław I the Tall, who founded the monastery on the site of an old stronghold by the Oder crossing. The abbey quickly became an important economic and cultural centre of Silesia, and in the 14th century, at the height of its prosperity, it owned estates from Greater Poland to Lesser Poland. From Lubiąż further monasteries were founded, among them at Mogiła, Henryków and Kamieniec Ząbkowicki.
After the Thirty Years' War, under the abbots Arnold Freiberger and Jan Reich, a period of reconstruction and flourishing lasting more than a century began, which gave the complex its Baroque character. The abbot's palace, built in 1681–1699, has wings 96 and 118 metres long, and the eastern façade of the abbey measures 223 metres. In the monastery church of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, which serves as the mausoleum of the Silesian Piasts, the tombstones of the founder and other princes survive. The interiors are decorated with frescoes by Michael Willmann, known as the Silesian Rembrandt.
The complex is one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe. It is now looked after by the Lubiąż Foundation. Visitors enter in groups with a guide, who shows the Abbot's Dining Room (Jadalnia Opata), the Ducal Hall (Sala Książęca), the church of the Most Holy Virgin Mary and the Summer Refectory.
