About the museum
The Muzeum Mazurskie w Szczytnie (Masurian Museum in Szczytno) was established in 1945 on the basis of the surviving collections of a German regional museum (Heimatmuseum) founded in 1925. It was initially housed in the remains of the Teutonic Order castle, and from 1948 it has occupied the southern and eastern wings of the town hall, built in 1936. The western side of the courtyard is closed by a relic of a 14th-century Teutonic Order castle.
Today the institution is a branch of the Muzeum Warmii i Mazur w Olsztynie (Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn). Its collections include archaeological finds, art, ethnographic objects, coins and natural history specimens, as well as a small collection of maps and a library with old printed books.
The permanent exhibitions present the history of Szczytno and its surroundings from prehistory to the present day, the folk culture of the Masurians and folk Masurian tiles. The museum also shows the difficult past of the Polish-German borderland and the multicultural traditions of the region. Every year it organises the Jarmark Mazurski (Masurian Fair), as well as temporary exhibitions, museum lessons and workshops.
