About the museum
The Sierakowice Land Museum came into being partly thanks to the memory of Fr Bernard Sychta, author of a seven-volume dictionary of Kashubian dialects, who was born in Puzdrowo, about 2 km from Sierakowice. In 1992, on the tenth anniversary of his death, staff of the cultural centre prepared a memorial exhibition, and objects from the home of the Sychta family gave rise to the idea of preserving the local heritage.
Staff appealed to residents to donate memorabilia and collected exhibits for about a year. A room of about 40 m² on the upper floor of the cultural centre building was allotted to the exhibition. The museum opened on 12 October 1993 under the name Muzeum Ziemi Sierakowickiej, and at the beginning it had 119 exhibits.
Over time the exhibition took over the whole floor and was arranged after the model of a former Kashubian farmstead. Today it holds about 700 exhibits: among them the fittings of a Kashubian house, the richest collection of household vessels and utensils, furniture, old farm tools and documents. The museum also runs regional lessons and organises temporary exhibitions.
