About the museum

Franciszek Treder was born in 1903 in Łączyńska Huta near Kartuzy. Even before the Second World War the authorities of the Kartuzy County considered establishing a Kashubian museum, but the outbreak of war interrupted these plans. In 1947 the Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Muzeum Kaszubskiego im. dr. Aleksandra Majkowskiego (Association of Friends of the Kashubian Museum named after Dr Aleksander Majkowski) was established in Kartuzy; together with Treder, it gathered the collections.

The museum’s seat became a post-German building vacated by the Public Security Office, where the institution is still housed. The official opening took place on 1 May 1947, and on 1 January 1950 the museum was nationalised; Treder became its head. Since 1995 the museum has borne the name of its founder.

On the ground floor of the main building visitors can see exhibitions on fishing, farming, household items and pottery, and on the upper floor elements of Kashubian culture and rituals, folk products, the contents of a dowry chest and the Izba Kaszubska (Kashubian Room). Separate buildings house Bazyli’s smithy with an exhibition on blacksmithing, and an exhibition devoted to Kashubian demonology and legends.
