About the museum
The history of the Neclów ceramics in Chmielno begins in 1897, when Franciszek Necel, a member of the next generation of a potters' family from Kościerzyna, moved to the village. Chmielno was then among the oldest pottery centres in Pomerania, alongside Kościerzyna and Kartuzy. Franciszek first apprenticed with local potters and around 1900 settled in a cottage he had bought on the shore of Lake Białe (Jezioro Białe).
Today the Neclów family workshop emphasises a tradition reaching back ten generations of potters, and continues it by making Kashubian utility and souvenir ceramics. Alongside its craft activity it offers visitors an exhibition that tells the story of the family and its workshop.
The exhibition includes wares of the last three generations of the Neclów family from 1897–1996. During the visit the process of making vessels and the work of the potter are explained, and guests can try working with clay themselves. In the workshop there is a shop selling items from current production, including an online shop.
