About the museum

The Muzeum Ziemi Pałuckiej (Pałuki Land Museum) is housed in the building of the Magistrat (town hall) at Plac Wolności (Freedom Square) in Żnin. The red-brick building was erected in 1906 as the seat of the municipal authorities and has remained unfinished to this day. It later served many functions, and since the mid-1990s it has housed the museum’s administration and permanent exhibitions on the history of printing, ethnography and motorboat sports. The collections are also gathered and catalogued here, and temporary exhibitions are shown in the Galeria im. Tadeusza Małachowskiego (Tadeusz Małachowski Gallery).

The ethnographic exhibition presents the culture of the Pałuki region: traditional costumes with embroidery, wooden and clay sculpture, painting and a reconstructed interior of a cottage (chata). A special place is taken by the works of Klara Prill, who devoted her life to documenting Pałuki folklore, and the marquetry of Edmund Kapłoński. The exhibition on printing explains that in Żnin in the 1930s the first Polish colour and women’s press was born, thanks to the publishing house of Anna and Alfred Krzycki. The Muzeum Sportów Motorowodnych (Museum of Motorboat Sports) collects engines, propellers, medals, photographs and posters from competitions held in Żnin and around the world.

Also belonging to the museum are its branches: the Baszta (Tower), a Gothic tower of the former 15th-century town hall in the middle of the market square; the Żnińska Kolej Powiatowa (Żnin County Railway); the Muzeum Kolei Wąskotorowej (Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum) in Wenecja; and the castle in Wenecja.
