About the museum
The Muzeum Historyczne w Przasnyszu (Historical Museum in Przasnysz) grew out of the social Muzeum Ziemi Przasnyskiej (Museum of the Przasnysz Land), founded under the patronage of the Society of Friends of the Przasnysz Land and officially opened on 14 July 1980. In September 1982 the society decided to nationalise the institution, which from June 1983 was a branch of the museum in Ostrołęka. Since 2013 the museum has operated as an independent municipal cultural institution, and it has borne its present name since its new statute of 2016.
The seat is in the centre of the market square, on the ground floor of the 18th-century town hall, and one of the exhibition rooms is on the upper floor. The collections include a historical and archaeological department, a documentary department and a museum library with publications on the region. They contain archaeological finds, historical objects, paintings, bas-reliefs, 19th-century craft documents, diplomas and photographs of old Przasnysz, as well as archival material relating to the martyrdom of the town's residents.
The permanent exhibitions include the multimedia exhibition “Złoty wiek Przasnysza” (The Golden Age of Przasnysz), aimed mainly at children, which tells of the town's splendour in the 15th and 16th centuries, using projections, games and apps on touch screens. The second permanent exhibition is “Wielka Wojna w Przasnyszu” (The Great War in Przasnysz), with films, photographs and commentary on the events of the First World War. The museum also runs museum lessons, workshops, lectures and publishing activities.
