About the museum
The museum in Ciechanów was founded on 1 January 1973 as the Museum of the Castle in Ciechanów. In 1976 it was renamed the Historical Museum; from 1979 it served as the district museum, and in 1998 it adopted its present name, the Masovian Nobility Museum (Muzeum Szlachty Mazowieckiej). In 1994 the institution took over the complex in Gołotczyzna, where a museum of Positivism operates.
The exhibition building at ul. Warszawska 61 was designed by the Ciechanów architect Jerzy Korczak. It was built in 1925 as a bank for merchants and farmers, and the museum received it in 1984. Next to it stands a former outbuilding from the early 20th century, handed over to the museum in 1997. The building housed permanent and temporary exhibitions; concerts, lectures and educational activities also took place there.
Since 23 June 2025 the building has been closed until further notice because of preparations for restoration works. The museum still gives visitors access to its branches, namely the castle of the Dukes of Masovia in Ciechanów and the Museum of Positivism in Gołotczyzna. The collections include archaeological finds, souvenirs of the Masovian nobility, portraits, European pewter, and old weapons and decorations.
