About the museum
The museum was founded in July 1978 on a social initiative and with the support of the town authorities, as the Muzeum Społeczne Ziemi Złotoryjskiej (Social Museum of the Złotoryja Land). It is housed in a building at ul. Zaułek 2, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, built into the town walls and distinguished by a mansard roof; it was adapted for the museum in 1973–1977. The core of the collection was a gift from the teacher and collector Leopold Schmetterling.
Until 1997 the museum was looked after by the Złotoryja branch of PTTK and the Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Złotoryjskiej (Society of Friends of the Złotoryja Land). In 1998 the museum was handed over to the Złotoryjski Ośrodek Kultury (Złotoryja Cultural Centre), within whose structures it still operates as a museum department, and by decision of the town council it received the name Muzeum Złota (Gold Museum). In the same year a permanent exhibition on gold mining was opened, covering the extraction of gold in the Kaczawa region and the trades of gold panning.
The museum occupies three floors: a geological exhibition presents the history of the Sudetes, the exhibition on gold mining shows tools, panning dishes, schlich concentrates and minerals, and the top floor houses a room for temporary exhibitions. The institution also organises workshops, the art competition “Piękno drzemiące w wulkanach” (The Beauty Dormant in Volcanoes) and fairs.
