About the museum
The Placówka Historyczno-Muzealna began operating in 1996, and since 2006 has functioned as a municipal unit within the structure of the Lwówek Public Library. It is located on the first floor of the Gothic-Renaissance town hall in Lwówek Śląski.
Visitors see the former court room, known as the Sala Ławy Sądowej (Court Bench Hall), dating from the 16th century, with partly preserved frescoes of a moralising character. It now serves as a historical hall: it displays archaeological finds, memorabilia from battlefields, exhibits on the history of the town, on Lwówek brewing and gold mining, and objects of everyday use. On the two lower levels of the tower are the Izba Tortur (Torture Chamber), with replicas of medieval and Renaissance tools, and the six-metre Loch Głodowy (Hunger Dungeon).
The route also includes the Agatowa Sala Multimedialna (Agate Multimedia Hall), with a collection of minerals and fossils, and, where possible, other interiors of the town hall: the Sala Ślubów (Wedding Hall), decorated in the early 20th century to designs by Wrocław artists under the direction of Hans Poelzig, the Sala Mieszczańska (Burgher’s Hall) and a vestibule with a curvilinear vault.
