About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Jaworze was founded in 1929. It is housed in the complex of a former Bernardine monastery, one of only two surviving Bernardine establishments of this medieval order in Lower Silesia. The history of the building goes back about five hundred years.
The complex includes a 15th-century hall church, cloisters, a garden courtyard (wirydarz) and a dansker (covered gallery) connected by a passage to the monastery wing. Inside the Gothic interiors of the former monastery church, sacred art is displayed, known for wall-painting transfers that are unique in Poland and for a cycle of Gothic-Renaissance polychromies on Passion themes.
The collections cover archaeology, geology, ethnography, militaria and old crafts. Since June 2013 the museum has also opened a section of the wing of the Piast castle, with a viewpoint in the tower. The museum lies on the routes of the Euroregion Nysa, the Cistercian Route, the Michael Willmann Sacred Baroque Art Route and the Via Regia.
