About the museum
The idea for the panorama came from the painter Jan Styka of Lwów, who invited the battle painter Wojciech Kossak to work with him. The painting, measuring 15 × 114 metres, was created in 1893–1894 to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Kościuszko Uprising and the Battle of Racławice of 4 April 1794. The solemn opening in Lwów, in the rotunda in the Stryjski Park, took place on 5 June 1894.
After the Second World War the canvas came to Wrocław together with part of the collections of the Ossolineum. For many years it could not be viewed, and restorations were carried out under makeshift conditions. The change came only after the events of August 1980, when the decision was taken to build a special rotunda in Wrocław.
The Muzeum “Panorama Racławicka” opened on 14 June 1985 at ul. Jana Ewangelisty Purkyniego. Visitors view the painting from a platform, and the sense of space is enhanced by a special painterly perspective, lighting and an artificial terrain in front of the canvas. The institution is a branch of the National Museum in Wrocław.
