About the museum
The Muzeum Architektury we Wrocławiu (Museum of Architecture in Wrocław) was founded in 1965 and is the only museum institution in Poland devoted entirely to the history of architecture and contemporary architecture. It opened in the rebuilt interiors of the former Bernardine monastery and church. Initially it was part of the Muzeum Wrocławia (Museum of Wrocław), and since 1971 it has operated as an independent institution; its organiser is the Gmina Wrocław (City of Wrocław).
The collections number several hundred thousand objects, from antiquity to the present day: architectural details, stained glass, stoves, plans, maps, models, photographs and architectural designs. Objects connected with the architecture and history of Wrocław hold a special place. Visitors can see permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions devoted to architecture, applied arts, painting and graphic art.
The museum works with the city to protect and revitalise architectural heritage. Its branch is the Archiwum Budowlane Miasta Wrocławia (Building Archive of the City of Wrocław), the largest collection of building plans of Wrocław in the country, covering the period from the 19th century to 1945. The main nave of the former church is also used as a concert and theatre venue.
