About the museum
The Muzeum Poczty i Telekomunikacji is the only institution in Poland that collects relics connected with postal activity in the Polish lands, including the Polish Post founded by King Sigismund Augustus (Zygmunt August) in 1558. The museum was established in 1921 in Warsaw and since 1956 has been housed in the historic main post office building in Wrocław. The building at ul. Krasińskiego 1, dating from 1929, was Wrocław's first skyscraper and before the war served as a postal cheque office.
The collections are gathered in the Philatelic department and the department of the history of post and telecommunications. The museum library holds Polish and foreign literature on philately, post and telecommunications, journals, specialist catalogues, early printed books and manuscripts. The collection includes, among other things, mail coaches (dyliżanse) from the late 19th century, postal uniforms, post horns, letter boxes and letter scales, and a prototype of a television set from 1947.
The permanent exhibitions show the history of the Polish post from the 16th century, Polish and foreign stamps (the collection has almost a million stamps), and the development of the telegraph and telephone, as well as radio and television. The museum belongs to the International Association of Transport Museums (IATM), and its organiser is the self-government of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship (samorząd województwa dolnośląskiego).
