About the museum

The Skansen Pszczelarski (Beekeeping Open-Air Museum) in Swarzędz was founded in 1963 by Professor Ryszard Kostecki. Over time a collection of beehives unique in Europe was gathered in the park; in the open air it illustrates the history of bartnictwo (forest beekeeping) and of beekeeping in Polish lands.

In 1999 the skansen was incorporated as a branch of the Muzeum Narodowe Rolnictwa i Przemysłu Rolno-Spożywczego w Szreniawie (National Museum of Agriculture and the Agri-Food Industry in Szreniawa). In the same year an exhibition on useful insects was set up in a former post-manorial farm building. In 2002 the institution was named after its creator, Professor Ryszard Kostecki, a promoter of the history and traditions of beekeeping.

Today, in the skansen grounds, visitors can see figural beehives and other historic beehives in the open air, as well as a small exhibition inside the museum building. The branch also runs educational classes for kindergartens and schools, where children learn about the life of bees, honey plants and bee products, and organises festivals and shows.

The exhibition in the building is on the ground floor and accessible to wheelchair users, but the threshold at the door is 6 cm and may require staff assistance. The educational room is separated from the exhibition by three steps (a separate entrance from the side of the building at ground level). The outdoor exhibition is partly accessible: on the right side of the building a path of concrete slabs leads on, while the left path is too narrow and uneven. Neither toilet is adapted for people with disabilities. A mobile induction loop is available at the ticket office, and a tactile plan of the museum hangs in the vestibule. Guide dogs are allowed on the skansen grounds.
