About the museum
Stawisko is an estate in Podkowa Leśna near Warsaw, which Stanisław Wilhelm Lilpop gave to his daughter Anna as a wedding present on 12 September 1922. Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz named the house Stawisko and moved in in 1928. Until the writer’s death in 1980 the house was an important centre of cultural life; guests included Karol Szymanowski, Jan Lechoń, Antoni Słonimski and Czesław Miłosz.
During the occupation the house gave shelter to people fleeing Warsaw, including Jerzy Andrzejewski, Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński and Witold Lutosławski. After the war Iwaszkiewicz wrote important works here and served as president of the Związek Literatów Polskich (Polish Writers’ Union). The park, now 16 hectares, developed together with the house: lime and spruce avenues, an orchard and paths appeared, and in the western part stands a chapel designed by Karol Stryjeński.
The interiors have kept their former character, which the museum regards as the greatest value of the place. Under the writer’s will Stawisko became state property, and today it operates as a museum, subordinate since 1999 to the starosta (county head) of Grodzisk. The institution continues the tradition of a literary and musical salon, organises concerts, meetings and the Festiwal Stawisko, and its archives are available to researchers of Polish culture.
