About the museum
The Museu da Tapeçaria de Portalegre – Guy Fino is housed in the former noble house of the Caldeira Castelo-Branco family, with an 18th-century portal, also known as the Palácio Castelo Branco. It opened in July 2001, after the building was restored by the architect Fernando Sequeira Mendes, and is dedicated to presenting, conserving and studying the Portalegre Tapestries, a fundamental part of the national artistic heritage.
The museum has two distinct units. One shows the historical component of the Manufatura de Tapeçarias de Portalegre (Portalegre Tapestry Manufactory) and the technical processes of making tapestry. The other presents tapestry works exclusively, following their chronology from their birth in the late 1940s to the present day. The collection includes tapestries based on works by artists such as Almada Negreiros, Le Corbusier, Júlio Pomar and Vieira da Silva.
The building also has a gallery for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, a café, a foyer and a garden.
