About the museum
The Museu Municipal do Crato is housed in a mid-18th-century palace on the former Rua do Arco, remodelled and extended to a design by the architect Fernando Sequeira Mendes. The route gives an overview of the municipality's prehistory, the Roman presence in the region and the role of the Order of the Hospital, or of Malta, in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period.
The collection brings together archaeological and artistic objects that illustrate the spiritual and material life of Crato and its population over time. It is the only museum that presents the territory of the Priory of Crato in a scientific and integrated way, from its origins to its administrative abolition.
In 2019 a contemporary art unit was inaugurated, in partnership with Novo Banco Cultura, bringing 20th-century Portuguese paintings by artists such as Vieira da Silva and Trindade d'Assumpção to Crato. An expansion of the museum dedicated to the daily life of the people of Crato in the 19th and 20th centuries is in preparation. The museum offers a virtual visit and room texts in English, French and Spanish.
