About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Marvão is housed in the former Igreja de Santa Maria, the oldest Catholic place of worship in the town, which has ceased to be used for worship. The museum was founded in 1986 and fully renovated in 2015, retaining the church's original architectural features.
The collections bring together sacred art, archaeology and ethnography and come largely from items donated by the residents of Marvão, which makes the museum also an interpretation centre for the municipality. It is located on the Largo de Santa Maria, in the upper part of the walled town, not far from the castle.
