About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico de Valencia de Alcántara opened on 31 October 2008 together with the Tourist Office. It occupies the upper gallery of the former Convent of the Poor Clares of Santa Ana, which was remodelled in 1928 as a school, with its cells converted into classrooms.
The eight rooms trace the traditional life of the town. The first recalls the General Navarro y Alonso de Celada school; another recreates a local print shop with machines and materials lent by the descendants of its owners. There are rooms on traditional festivals, such as Los Mayos, the Cruz de Mayo and San Isidro Labrador, and on the cooking of the pig slaughter (matanza).
The route is completed by old trades, above all those of the countryside, with a forge and a carpentry workshop, the recreation of a bedroom and a sewing room from an early 20th-century house, a display of posters and photographs from the municipal archive, and a room evoking the former Luis Rivera cinema. Much of the collection consists of donations from local residents.
