About the museum
The B-MAD occupies the former summer residence of the Marquis of Abrantes, in Alcântara. The building now houses the Berardo collection, which is devoted to decorative arts from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
The collection brings together pieces from the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, presented in period rooms that recreate a domestic setting. Among the designers represented are Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, René Lalique and Jules Leleu, alongside Portuguese makers such as Ernesto Canto da Maya and Eloy de Jesus Pereira.
The museum also holds original drawings by Ruhlmann for the Casa de Serralves and part of the silverware design drawings of the former Ourivesaria Reis e Filhos (goldsmith's shop). Next to the reception there is a garden in the Deco style, with a terrace.
