About the museum
The Museu do Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau (CCCM) is devoted to the study and promotion of Portuguese–Chinese relations. The collection has more than 3,500 pieces of various types, including statuary, costumes and utilitarian and decorative objects, in materials such as terracotta, textiles and porcelain. The collector António Sapage made an important contribution.
The museum has two complementary sections. The first, “A Condição Histórico-Cultural de Macau nos Séculos XVI e XVII” (The Historical and Cultural Condition of Macau in the 16th and 17th Centuries), refers to China under the Ming and to the intercultural frontier between Europe and China created by the port city of Macau, with sections on the beginnings of the Portuguese–Chinese encounter, the port city, ecological and technological exchanges, and Christianity.
The second section is the Chinese Art Collection, which spans more than 5,000 years of history and art, with Neolithic ceramics, terracottas, bronzes, porcelain, lacquerware, painting, fans, silverware, costumes, ivories and numismatics.
