About the museum

The Museu do Oriente opened in 2008 in a building on Lisbon's riverside front, at Doca de Alcântara (North), and belongs to the Oriente Foundation. It presents itself as a multicultural museum that preserves the tangible and intangible heritage of several Asian countries through two collections: Presença Portuguesa na Ásia (Portuguese Presence in Asia) and Kwok On.

The Presença Portuguesa na Ásia collection brings together thousands of artistic and documentary objects acquired by the Oriente Foundation, including furniture, ivories, textiles, sacred art, porcelain, painting and sculpture. It is organised on the first floor by country and region: India, Sri Lanka, China, Macau, Japan, Korea and East Timor (Timor-Leste). It includes Chinese and Japanese folding screens from the 17th and 18th centuries, pieces of namban art and armorial porcelain of the Companhia das Índias (East India Company).

The Kwok On collection was born from a donation by the Chinese banker Kwok On to the French sinologist Jacques Pimpaneau in 1971, and was donated to the Oriente Foundation in 1999. It has more than 15 thousand objects, from Turkey to Japan, on Asian performing arts and their ritual, narrative and religious contexts, among them puppets, masks, costumes, musical instruments and figurines.

The ticket gives access to the permanent exhibition and all temporary exhibitions. The museum also has a programme of performances, an education service, courses and lectures.
