About the museum
The Museu da Carris opened on 12 January 1999 and is an integral part of the Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa. It presents the history of public transport in the capital, from animal-drawn vehicles to funiculars and electric traction, through vehicles, models, documents and everyday objects such as uniforms, tickets and workshop equipment. It has been part of the Rede Portuguesa de Museus since 2010.
The origin of the collection goes back to 1997, when, by selling 24 trams that had not been refurbished, the company's management reserved part of the historic fleet for the future museum. The museum is at Santo Amaro Station, in Alcântara, where Lisbon's trams are housed, and is divided into three sections, two of them in former disused workshops. The first section occupies the company's former headquarters, the Palácio dos Condes da Ponte, acquired in 1874, with rooms organised by theme and in chronological order.
In addition to the exhibition, the museum has an educational service, birthday parties, guided visits, a shop and a documentation centre, and offers a virtual tour of tram route 28.
