About the museum
The MACAM presents to the public the collection of modern and contemporary art assembled by Armando Martins, who began it in 1974 and continues to develop it. It is a private initiative and opened in 2025.
The museum occupies an 18th-century palace, rehabilitated and enlarged with new construction, in the area between Alcântara and Belém, which has housed educational institutions since the early 20th century. The complex also includes a hotel, a shop, a café, a restaurant and the àCapela space, in a former deconsecrated chapel.
The collection has more than 600 works, from the late 19th century to the present. The first phase, from 1974, gathered mainly Portuguese art of the 20th-century movements; from the 2000s onwards it has also included international contemporary art. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and mediation programmes for schools, families and other audiences.
