About the museum
The Museu Marquês de Pombal grew out of a collection assembled over about 25 years by the Pombal antiquarian Manuel Gameiro, who donated the original collection to the municipality on condition that a municipal museum be created. The idea dates from 1978, and the museum opened on 8 May 1982 in the Paços do Concelho (town hall), in the former Convento de Santo António, as part of the commemorations of the bicentenary of the statesman's death.
In July 2004 it moved to the Cadeia Velha, on Praça Marquês de Pombal, a building commissioned by the Marquis of Pombal in 1776 and adapted as a museum after remodelling work. Today it is a monographic museum whose collection brings together pieces that belonged to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo or relate to him, organised in several sections on the statesman and on the national and local history of the 18th century.
The museum has accessibility resources for blind, deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors, a documentation centre and an education service.
