About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Óbidos opened on 15 June 1970 and is part of the Rede de Museus e Galerias de Óbidos (Óbidos Network of Museums and Galleries). Its aim is to promote the cultural heritage of the municipality, make works of art known and strengthen knowledge of the territory, through research, inventory, conservation and restoration work, which results in exhibitions and study days.
The collection is drawn from the municipal holdings of religious art, which include liturgical objects, painting and sculpture from the 15th to the 18th century, and from archaeological artefacts. Many pieces are on deposit from the parishes of Óbidos and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Óbidos.
The permanent exhibition is a journey through the artistic production and religious devotion of the town. The collection reflects the activity of the collegiate churches and commissions from some of the great names of Portuguese art, such as André Reinoso, Baltazar Gomes Figueira and Belchior de Matos, and highlights the work of Josefa de Óbidos. Other exhibitions bring classic works from the collection into dialogue with the work of contemporary artists.
