About the museum
The Museu Paroquial de Óbidos, also called the Museu de São João, is housed in the restored Church of São João Baptista, the former Chapel of São Vicente da Gafaria, next to the Porta da Vila. The chapel was built by Rainha Santa Isabel (Queen Saint Elizabeth) in 1309, dedicated to São Vicente, to provide religious care to lepers, who suffered most in the Middle Ages.
In the early 16th century the building passed to the property of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Óbidos and, from 19 October 1636 until the advent of liberalism, it was the seat of the Parish and Collegiate Church of São João Baptista.
The museum's mission is to present sacred art and to promote the study, research, organisation and dissemination of the Church's artistic and historical heritage. It draws on the relationship between the parishes of Óbidos and the Misericórdia, and works with the Rede de Museus e Galerias de Óbidos to define temporary thematic exhibitions.
