About the museum
The Castle of Viana do Alentejo, classified as a national monument since 1910, is a complex made up of the walled structure and the religious spaces within it: the Church of Nossa Senhora da Anunciação (parish church), the Church of the Misericórdia, the Chapel of Santo António and the former chapel of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, now converted into an interpretation centre for the complex.
Some sources place the origin of the structure in the reign of King Dinis, at the time of the town's first charter in 1313, but more recent research points to a later construction. The enclosure housed the original town hall, the town's first cemetery and the original parish church, dedicated to Santa Maria de Foxem. At the beginning of the 16th century it saw new works directed by Diogo de Arruda, master builder of the Entre Tejo e Odiana comarca.
The castle also houses the tourist office and a programme of temporary exhibitions in the Church of the Misericórdia, and information in Braille is available for visitors with visual impairments.
