About the museum
The Museu de Arte Sacra is part of the complex of the Sé de Évora, the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. Construction of the cathedral began in 1186, it was consecrated in 1204 and completed around 1250, in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, and it was improved in the 15th and 16th centuries. The museum holds the cathedral's treasury, part of which is in the north tower.
The collection brings together pieces of vestments, painting, sculpture and goldsmith's work. Among the most outstanding works are the 13th-century Virgin known as Nossa Senhora do Paraíso (Our Lady of Paradise), the 14th-century Cross-Reliquary of the Santo Lenho (Holy Wood), the crozier of Cardinal D. Henrique and the gallery of portraits of the archbishops.
The visit to the museum can be combined with that of the cathedral, the cloister and the terrace, which offers a wide view over Évora.
