About the museum

The museum branch of the municipality of Viana do Alentejo is housed on the ground floor of the former Paços do Concelho, on the Praça da República. Three small rooms, which in the past served as the municipal prison, now house the exhibition.

The branch's first exhibition focuses on the archaeological heritage identified and collected throughout the municipality. The pieces come from heritage and urban rehabilitation works carried out by the Câmara since 2013 and from the field surveys of the Carta Arqueológica do Concelho (municipal archaeological map). Several artefacts were lent by a broad group of people.

The display shows how the territory that now makes up the municipality was occupied over the last five or six millennia, how its inhabitants lived and what their settlements were like.
