About the museum
The Museu Municipal de Palmela began operating at the end of the 1980s as a polynuclear, permanently operating, non-profit structure, with the mission of preserving the cultural heritage of the municipality. It brings together collections that represent the memory of each parish and gives priority to preserving collections and buildings in the places where they are located.
The movable collection includes archaeological pieces from surveys and excavations carried out in the municipality since 1988, several ethnographic collections, such as the Oficina do Ferreiro Faria, the Casa Caramela, the Património Vitivinícola and the Centro Histórico de Palmela, and a collection of contemporary art.
In the Castle Unit, partnerships with the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (National Museum of Ancient Art) and the Museu da Arma de Transmissões Militares (Military Signals Corps Museum) made it possible to open the Reserva Visitável de Escultura de São Tiago (Visitable Reserve of São Tiago Sculpture) and the space for Military Transmissions. The museum also manages the Igreja de Santiago (Church of Santiago) in the castle and the keep, with a small exhibition on the beacon fires (almenaras) lit in 1384. It is organised into units and extensions, such as the Museu – A Estação in Pinhal Novo and the Museu da Música Mecânica.
