About the museum
The Casa-Museu Abel Salazar occupies the house where Abel Salazar (1889–1946), university professor, scientist, writer and visual artist, lived for the last 25 years of his life. It stands on the Quinta da Devesa, in São Mamede de Infesta, next to the line of an old Roman road and the pilgrims' route to Santiago. The building is a typical 19th-century “casa de brasileiro de torna-viagem” (house of a returned emigrant from Brazil), built on the site of an earlier manor house, of which the 18th-century chapel of Nossa Senhora da Apresentação still survives.
The museum belongs to the University of Porto and its mission is to study, conserve, interpret and promote the legacy of Abel Salazar. The long-term exhibition brings together personal objects, drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and hammered copper pieces, scientific works, books and writings. On the ground floor are the entrance hall, with landscapes of the Minho and small sculptures, and the chapel, with busts and hammered copper pieces. On the first floor, the studio, living room and dining room keep the furniture and arrangement of the period.
The house is temporarily closed to the public while the spaces are renovated. The museum keeps its temporary exhibitions, its library and a virtual visit online.
