About the museum
Francisco Almeida Moreira (1873–1939) was one of the great promoters of culture in the Viseu region in the 20th century and the founder and first director of the Museu Grão Vasco. In his will, he named the Municipality of Viseu as heir to his house and his collections, so that a house museum could be set up there.
The museum occupies the collector’s former residence on Rua Soar de Cima, designed by the architect Raul Lino. The house functions as a library-museum open to the public and preserves the atmosphere of its owner’s home.
The collection brings together a library, paintings, furniture, porcelain, sculpture and ceramics from various Portuguese production centres. The painters represented include Silva Porto, Marques de Oliveira, José Malhoa and Columbano. The museum is run by the Municipality of Viseu.
