About the museum
The Museu de História da Cidade de Viseu is a multi-site municipal project, conceived since at least 1977 and already envisaged by José Coelho more than a century ago. Its realisation began on 18 May 2018 with the opening of the first space, an exhibition unit on Rua Direita, followed a year later by the virtual hub.
The exhibition unit occupies a building with medieval features, such as the ogival windows on the ground floor, where the Papelaria Dias stationery shop operated for many years. It presents the exhibition “Ícones da História de Viseu – O Despertar do Museu” (Icons of Viseu’s History – The Awakening of the Museum), the prelude to the city’s future museum, which traces the history of Viseu from its origins in the Iron Age, through the Roman period and the Middle Ages, to the 20th century.
The project also includes the Polo Arqueológico de Viseu, the Imagoteca, a 360° virtual visit and an augmented-reality route through the city, as well as the Centro Interpretativo da Cava de Viriato, which is in preparation.
