About the museum
The Casa do Miradouro, one of the most notable historic buildings in Viseu, dates from the 16th century and houses the archaeological collection of José Coelho, a 20th-century intellectual from Viseu and one of the pioneers of archaeology in the Viseu region. The collection forms part of the Polo Arqueológico de Viseu António Almeida Henriques.
The exhibition “José Coelho: A Paixão pelo Passado” reveals the legacy of this researcher and has a strong educational component. It focuses on a group of objects that are icons of regional history, the result of his excavations or gifts from colleagues and students. The objects show the care and affection José Coelho had for each one, as he knew they were only part of a vast puzzle he sought to reconstruct. A virtual visit to the space is available.
