About the museum

The Casa-Museu Teixeira Lopes was created in 1933, when the sculptor decided to donate the house and his entire estate to the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. The building was constructed at the end of the 19th century, to a design by the architect José Teixeira Lopes, the sculptor's brother, to serve as a residence and studio. António Teixeira Lopes lived there until 1942. The house opened to the public on 3 December 1933, with an exhibition design conceived by the master himself.

The house keeps the division between living and working spaces, the original furniture and the sculptor's work in plaster, marble and bronze, as well as drawings. The collection also includes works by other sculptors, such as Soares dos Reis and Oliveira Ferreira, and by Portuguese and foreign painters, as well as faience, tapestries and decorative arts, among them hundreds of pieces from the ceramics factories of Gaia.

The museum is completed by the Galerias Diogo de Macedo, in an annex building opened in 1975, when the widow of the sculptor, critic and art historian Diogo de Macedo donated a large part of his work and collection to the municipality. The galleries were remodelled and reopened in 2004 and also host temporary exhibitions. Together, the two units offer a view of the visual arts of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century.
