About the museum

The Museu Municipal de Benavente, also known as the Museu Dr. António Gabriel Ferreira Lourenço, opened in July 1980. It houses a vast ethnographic collection gathered over some 40 years by Joaquim Parracho, to which many donations from private individuals were added. Collecting everyday objects, family life and work items prevented their loss and preserved the collective memory of the region.

The museum is housed in a dwelling built at the end of the 18th century by Captain Colaço Lobo, later acquired by António Gabriel Ferreira Lourenço, who bequeathed it in his will on condition that it be used as a museum. The building has two floors, with a façade of stone corner quoins and bands facing Rua Luís de Camões, and spacious exhibition rooms that keep their original layout.

As a territory museum, it holds more than 20,000 objects, with significant collections of agricultural tools (including those of rice cultivation), costume and embroidery, ceramics, traditional crafts and photography. In 2000 the Núcleo Museológico Agrícola (Agricultural Museum Unit) opened in the former municipal slaughterhouse, and the institution gained more than one site. The main building is closed for a complete refurbishment.
