About the museum
The Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira opened in 2005 in the former chapel of the Convento do Carmo, next to one of Tavira's best-known churches. It is part of the national network of Ciência Viva centres and is run by a non-profit association whose partners are the Municipality of Tavira, the University of the Algarve and the Agência Nacional para a Cultura Científica e Tecnológica.
In addition to the interactive exhibition, the centre functions as a laboratory space for experimental science activities. It organises lectures, temporary exhibitions and educational activities for schools and the public, runs interpretation trails through the region's natural and heritage areas, and sells science toys.
The permanent exhibition is themed on water and energy.
